Video Feedback

Youtube
From uploading the video to the video sharing network YouTube, we can gain statistics of view count, ratings and comments which will tell us if the video is popular, liked and allows the audience to give their own personal comments on the video.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FJs69CU-9yU

Facebook
Since many people of the demographic use facebook, by linking the video we can reach out to a wider audience to gain more feedback through likes and comments. We have therefore both linked the video onto our Facebook profiles to receive this feedback.

Survey Monkey
To get further feedback we have created another survey using the same website that we used for the audience research. We find the questionnaire will give us more defined statistics from the audience to see if we have produced a acquit promotional video that meets the requirements of the target audience as it gives us the oppurtunity to get closed answer questions.

Final Video

Editing Process - Digipak and Advert

Software
To create the Digipak and Advert I used a piece of software called Adobe Photoshop CS4. This is an graphic manipulation software and has all the tools that is needed to create the ancillary products.

Paper Texture
Firstly I used a paper texture and added a sepia tone to it so that it would old and faded to add to the theme of the product.

The photos
The photos are an important part of the digipak and advert and to make them blend with the theme I adjusted the colour curves and the hue and saturation of them.

The Title
The logo of the band needed to fit with the colour scheme of the digipak and advert so by using layer -> blending options I added a gradient to it.

The CD's
To create the cd's we took the sizing from an online template and then cut out the area and added an image onto the the cd's.
For the album disc we added a craquelure effect to it which made the cd look more rugged and worn out which is the theme of the products.

The Advert Gradient
To make the the paper texture blend into the photo on the advert just like the flatplans that we created we used a vector layer and added a gradient effect to it which made the paper texture and the photo layers blend together.

The Logos
To make the logos look unlike the original ones we use blending options to edit the transparency and the way that the logos interacted with layer underneath which gave us a worn out look.

Editing Process - Video

Changes to the storyboards
Using the storyboards, we sequenced the shots in the same order. However during the editing process we felt that there were some shots that required changing for the benefit of the video.
  • Shot 20 which was initially planned to be an establishing shot of the busy streets of York however we changed this to a location shot of York Minster as we had already shot some location shots that would appear throughout the video.
  • In planning we intended shot 25 to be a long shot of the main character walking toward the camera when out filming we changed this to an extreme long shot from the side as it fit in with the surrounding area.
  • Shot 29 initially intended to be the character sat on a bench however when out filming we decided to change this location. Instead we used the edge of the fountain as the fountain is a more of an iconic place.
  • Shot 30 had been changed from a standard P.O.V shot to a long shot, which the character then steps into the frame as we felt it denoted how the character went back to see the guitarist after thinking on the fountain.
  • Shot 3 on page 6 of the storyboard was the P.O.V shot from the characters eyes as he put money in the guitarists case. We have completely cut this shot out as we felt we had a sufficient amount of shots in this scene. We feel the long time of the shot that we replaced it with makes the audience feel more of a connection with how the main character is connecting with the guitarist.
  • Shot 4 and 5 in on page 6 have been swapped around to add to the variety of shot distances
  • Shot 6 on page 6 was left out as it didn't seem to fit in with the running order of the music.
Colour Grading
We have chose to add a colour grade to the entire video, giving it a warm feel, similar to video shot on film. We chose to do this as in the research, the other music videos of this band used vcr players and projection shots of film and therefore wanting to keep the analogue feel we added a colour grading to add to this collection that the bands music videos have.

The Last Shot
This shot was done by walking backwards with the camera and revealing all the characters together, as a band. We wanted to make it feel like the characters dreams of being in a band and having his life change direction by adding dreamy feeling effects. We have added a stabilisation program to make the camera track backwards smoothly and we have also increased the diffusion of the shot to make it more 'out of this world'. We finally added a small wobble effect to the clip in conjunction with a blur to fade out. This I feel creates a 'cliff hanger' feel to the music video as it hints that the character may have only been dreaming about this.

Summary
Overall I feel the video production as gone well. The variety of camera work and the pace of the shots express the mood of the song well, featuring no rapid cuts the whole video I feel runs together well. Particular shots I am pleased of are the ones that feature lens flares behind the character as the composition and location that we chose were a good choice. I also feel that the narrative of the music video moves at the correct pace. We have some shots that lower the standard of the video and that due to time issues can not be redone. The shot where the character begins to sing and it cuts to a side view and back to a front view while he is walking across a bridge is slightly out of continuity as you can see that the character has just began to walk again when the angle is changed. We have tried to eliminate this problem but due to lyrics needing to be seen we could not cut out the character just starting to walk again. There is also a shot in the church area that has dark lighting and feels a bit out of the style that the others shots are in.

Filming Complications

Over the past 2 days we have filmed in the centre of York. The first day has gone well and we have filmed the location shots and main character shots that we scheduled to do on the shooting schedule. The second day has not been as successful as due to actors unable to attend due to reasons on the day we were unable to shoot and we have therefore planned another date at the weekend to finish the filming.

Advert - Drafts

Initial flat plan:                                                 Initial plan:
Similar to the digipak we have created and initial flat plan and and initial plan. From the research, the magazine adverts often feature the title of the band quite large in relation to the other elements and is easily read and most of the time draws the audiences eye first when they look at the advert. Because of this we have placed the title at the top and have chosen to put a picture of the band at the bottom so once the audience have read the band name they will look down to the band itself and be tempted to read the titles as they look down the advert. The advert will feature the name of the band, album and the single but will also feature the website name and relevant labels such as the island record label and stores where the album can be purchased. We did not want to put features such as ratings and other information as we wanted to keep it minimalistic and easy for the audience to view.

Digipak - Draft

Here are the two drafts for the digipak. To plan where we are going to place the certain features of the digipak we have created a flat plan. This has given us a basic understanding to how to set it out.

Initial flat plan:

From the flat plan we have created an initial plan. By using photographs similar to the ones that we will take on the day of filming, we have created a mock up of the digipak layout. The front cover will have a photograph of the converse shoes that the main character uses in the video. These will be used as iconography as they represent how the person who has worn them have traveled far and is aged. We have then used two pictures of the buskers and one picture of the main character in the video. Finally for the part of the digipak that will contain the cd and the part that contains we have used an aged paper texture to maintain the theme of aging within the digipak.

Initial plan:

Actors / Props /Costumes/Transport

Actors
We will use three actors in the music video; the lead singer/character, the drummer and the guitarist. These will all be male to reflect the male band members in the original band. There will be also many characters in public in the location shots on the storyboards.

Props
The props required will be an acoustic guitar, a microphone and stand, two plastic tubs and a cymbal for the street drums. We also will need a hat and a small portion of change to use in the video. These will support the busker feel, but the acoustic guitar will especially support the calm, natural feel that the audience feel the song has, as seen by the audience survey.
Costumes
Importantly the old converses are the most important part of clothing we need for the video as they are used as iconography to represent age through walking far and the shoes have become old because of that. We shall also use clothing that is in fashion at the current time. Ideas are demonstrated below. These are similar to other videos that I have analysed from Bombay Bicycle club.
Transport
As the locations are at my house and the centre of York. We will only require a bus to get to the centre of York on the day of shooting.

Locations

Using Google Maps Street View we have pinpointed each location.

Location 1
This location will be used for the character to be walking between the trees. I feel that the trees surrounding the character will connote a sense of isolation which expands the idea of the video.

Location 2
This is the market square, which is regarded as the centre point of the city centre. As it is the centre point it helps support the way that the character does not know which route he should take in his life; he could go down a street in either direction. Shooting with the fountain in the background is significant as it represents a series of thoughts pouring out of the characters mind which should work well as we hope to use this location while the character is thinking. The urban feel of the centre point of the city centre also links back to the research as the other Bombay Bicycle club videos are urban. Finally being the centre point this is the most bustling area of the city which will aid us when we are trying to find a lot of people to represent the culture of the city.

Location 3

This location is the famous street: The Shambles. It is a very historic street, including fourteenth century over hanging timber buildings. The unique beauty of this street will be an ideal shooting location to display the culture of York. More information on The Shambles can be found here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Shambles

Location 4
I want to feature the architectural centre point of York: The Minster in the video because I feel it is the building that has the most cultural history within the city.  As it is a place of religion that dates back centuries, many people have gone to it for refuge and guidance and that’s why I feel it will fit in with the way the character is searching for meaning within his life during the video.

Location
Here is an overview of the area of the Minster. The grass area is an ideal location because it is spacious and will allow us to foreground the characters with a good amount of the minster behind them.

Storyboarding

Initial Planning - Digipak and Advert

Photography
During the filming, we will take still shots of the microphone and stand, the pair of converse shoes, the guitarist, the drummer and a small collection of location shots. These photos will be used in the digipak and the poster.

Items to include
As well as the photography we need to include the title of the album and the artist name, serial codes, bonus dvd features, record label logo and the website address on the digipak. The advert will contain the name of the the band and single as well as the website but also feature the main stores that the album is available on for the audience to purchase it at.

Initial Planning - The Video

The Story / Narrative
From listening to the song several times, I have concluded that the song develops at a slow rate through out and has a minimalistic feel to it. Therefore we have decided that the story is primarily about how the main character (singer) wakes and heads into town to revile the culture that is awaiting him. He feels quite alone and isolated as he wonders in to the busy streets of the city. There are many buskers there and in the busy streets and the main character witnesses this and starts to become inspired to join together the buskers and form a band. It shows how a man watching his life pass, is influenced to bring together the culture. We decided to add a dominant storyline rather than the band playing because of feedback from the research and that in only some Bombay Bicycle Club videos the band are playing completely together.

Here is an inspirational video that has given us the foundation to the development of the video:

Descriptions Of Locations
An ideal location for the city is the centre of york as it is regularly busy and if very well known for busking. The location ia urban but also historic which supports the old fashioned feel of the other Bombay Bicycle Club videos. The historic locations would also represent how the character is feeling like his life is passing by as the buildings are old.
More information about busking in York can be found here: http://www.york.gov.uk/business/Licences_and_street_trading/street/Street_trading_licence/Busking/

Performance
The performers will be the band members including a guitarist and a drummer as the video still needs to feature the band members playing their instruments as not all of the demographic would only like to see narrative in the video. These members will be represented as buskers in the street and will play to the song in parts of the video.

Characters
The clothing of the characters who are the performers will have the same clothing scheme as the anaylised schemes from the research. They will be wearing similar old and worn out clothing like the main character to create a relation between them and so that the audience can group them together.

The Final Demographic (Audience Profile)

James is an outgoing, fashionable young teenager of age 17. He enjoys the Indie music genre a lot and expresses this through his participation in music gigs and his collection of printed band t-shirts. The typical wardrobe of James consists of a variety of shirts, skinny jeans, hoodies and trainers from popular brands such as Converse and Vans. Shopping at high street stores such as Topman, Republic, HMV and Office, as well as online stores such as www.chemical-records.co.uk, www.americanapparel.com and www.urbanoutfitters.com is common from him. While on the internet he regularly uses social networking websites such as Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr to express his views and opinions on his lifestyle. As well as using Youtube and Myspace to watch music videos and behind the scenes features of his favourite bands. By attending college, he expresses his knowledge of the Indie genre with his friends.

Here is a typical picture of James's lifestyle:

Audience Research - Interview

Interviewee: Matthew Carruthers

1. How easy is it for you to relate the song with the music videos of this band?
"This song has a very similar feel to the songs off the album. The looping feel of the song makes me think of the video that uses the vcr and old look that speeds up and down."

2. How much do you prefer bands to look like they're playing live in their music videos?

"I find that having too much of just the band playing can be boring and not very appealing to me. I find videos that have an artistic, well thought out story are cooler"

3. How strong do you think the advertising of this band is?
"I have seen adverts in a few magazines and the promotion of the band on the social networking sites is strong. I think because they have their own unique logo on all the adverts ect, it helps people identify the band faster when they see it on adverts and that."

4. Do you think the band expands on other interests and cultures in society such as skateboarding and why?

"I don't think they focus on sports like skateboarding or bmxing. I think they add their own fashion styles to their music videos; a laid back, slightly smart feel to fashion. I also think they like to highlight film and photography in their music videos as you can see the by the projection in the Magnet video and the vcr in Always Like This."

Summery
From the questions I feel that the video will be more successful if it featured a old worn out feel similar to the vcr and film looks of the other videos as the product research and the interview has highlighted this. I also think that the video should feature the band members but not playing the instruments as a band as much because the interview has brought up the issue that music videos can get boring and not very progressive through this. The use of the unique band logo and the bands own fashion style also seems a way forward in the production of this package.

Audience Research - Interview Plan

I will carry out an interview on a selected friend who is a keen fan of Bombay Bicycle Club and the Indie genre.

The questions are all qualitative and are these:

1. How easy is it for you to relate the song with the music videos of this band?
2. How much do you prefer bands to look like they're playing live in their music videos?
3. How strong do you think the advertising of this band is?
4. Do you think the band expands on other interests and cultures in society such as skateboarding and why?

These questions will be answered thoroughly and will let me understand the personality of the fan as well as his opinion to support the demographic I will create.

Audience Research - Survey Results

Audience Research - Secondary Research

The Indie Genre
'Indie rock is a sub-genre of alternative rock that originated in the United Kingdom and the United States in the 1980s. Indie rock is extremely diverse, with sub-genres that include lo-fi, post-rock, math rock, indie pop, dream pop, noise rock, space rock, sadcore, riot grrrl and emo, among others. Originally used to describe record labels, the term became associated with the music they produced and was initially used interchangeably with alternative rock.'
      ...Wikipedia

The Indie Demographic
'The scene: if you really think all indie kids do is try to be cooler than other people then... well.. you're mostly right. The main point is, don't take the scene and the whole hipster attitude seriously. No one does. And if you do, well, then I'm cooler than you.'
This is a quote from Urban Dictionary ( http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=indie )
This is the main demographic; trying to avoid the mainstream system of music, fashion and lifestyle. Looking futher into the Indie demographic, the person should be into the latest lifestyle choices that are regarded as 'Indie'.

Customer Market
To develop my knowledge on what the demographic for the band is I have viewed the sale point of the album on amazon.com and looked at what the customers of the Bombay Bicycle Club album also purchase.

These artists are of the same Indie genre and the conventions are all similar.

Product Research - Additional Examples Of Music Videos

Here are additional examples of the music videos in this genre to get a better overall understanding:

I havent analyised these but they have expanded my indeas of the conventions of the indie music video genre as they contain simliar features to the videos that I have analysed. The Foals video features iconography such as the crow and the clothing is in fashion with the shirts and the jeans. The Tokyo Police Club video has a middle class urban enviroment which is simliar to the Bombay Bicycle Club videos of the Indie genre and the Band Of Horses video is distinct as it is filmed with a old film camera. This is similar to the use of the VCR in the Bombay Bicycle Club video as they both have old vintage feels to them.

Product Research - Goodwins Theory

Andrew Goodwin's theory is based upon the conventional features of the music video, regardless of the genre of music. The key features he has identified are:

- A relationship between the lyrics and the visuals, with the visuals illustrating, amplifying or contradicting the lyrics.
- A relationship between the music and the visuals, with the visuals illustrating, amplifying or contradicting the music.
- Intertextual references to other media texts may be present.
- Multiple close-ups of the main artist or vocalist.
- Genre-related style and iconography present.
- Voyeurism often plays a major part, especially in relation to females.

Further more he states that the music video is a representation or link between visuals and the song. There are also promotional elements in the song including the close ups of the band members and the performance of the band makes it look live so it makes the audience want to see the band at a concert. Finally voyeurism is used to amplify the videos attractiveness, especially females while intertextuality is used in more humorous videos.

Goodwin's theory is demonstrated in the videos I have previously analysed:

Here in the 'Always Like This' song there is multiple shots of the band peroforming with their instruments which supports the promotional points.

Here is a medium close up of the main singer which is demonstrating his energetic personality and is passion to sing to the audience. This also is promotional to the band.

Product Research - Promotional Advert Analysis 3

Feeder - Renegades
The Feeder advert is very bold and simple. It lets the audience know the name of the band straight away and as you read down it gives only basic information.

The photograph is a studio shot and is quite expressionistic with the name of the album on a naked woman with strange mise en scene objects. This therefore makes the advert stand out and will draw the audiences attention further.

Little information is given on the poster apart from the web address at the bottom right. Therefore the audience are expected to know where to buy the album and if in doubt visit the website which will also draw their attention to other promotional media texts of the band.

Product Research - Promotional Advert Analysis 2

Noah And The Whale - The First Days Of Spring

This advert is very minimalistic and traditional. The photograph is the band stoof in a field and the lead singer taking a photograph/film of the camera this photo was taken with. This creates a direct connection with the audience. The mise en scene of the costumes of summery shirts and the grass in the field have connotations of the season Spring, which is the title of the album. The photograph is the same one from the album cover so this helps the audience relate the different media texts of the band with the iconic photo. The photograph is colour graded to a pastell colour feel which conotes neutral emotions which can be related to the album.

Product Research - Promotional Advert Analysis 1

The Subways - Money and Celebrity

This is a HMV exclusive promotional advert, primarly trying to make the audience shop at HMV for the album. It is very detailed, with a lot of different information including the price, a studio shot of the band and the album. As well as additional information on the album and of HMV.

The studio shot, which takes up the entire page, directly addresses the audience as the entire band are looking at the camera. Therefore as the audience look at the page, their eyes make contact with the band and they look at the other features of the page. The medium 3 shot of the band is done for the audience to recognise the band as The Subways that have not been in the spotlight for a while. The black costumes of the band sopport this as further as the audiences eyes only take notice of the faces of the band.

There is also a picture of the album, which lets the audience know the appearance of it when they are looking for it in HMV or other record stores.

Finally the font is simple and minimalistic which makes it easy for the audience to read. This is most likely because there is a lot of information to read on the page.

Product Research - Album Cover Analysis 3

Foals - Total Life Forever

Total Life Forever is the second album by the the British Indie Rock band Foals. It was released 10th May 2010 by Transgressive Records.

The album itself does not have a main point that draws the audience to it, the title, blue water and the people could be looked at first when the audience first see it. However the title stands out with the san serif, bold, black font which makes it easy to recognise the title of the album and the artist which makes it easy for the audience to understand the information of the album.

Filling the entire album cover, the picture blends well with the titles as the white sunbeam makes the text stand out. Throughout the picture, it appears that there gradient from the bottom where it is dark to the top where it is light. This relates to the name of the album as the band seem to be trying to swim through a current and as the light connotes life and the dark connotes death, the band may be struggling to 'live forever' which relates to the name of the album.
The water and swimming also relates strongly to the music video of a song on the album; Spanish Sahara. This links the different promotion techniques of the band together and therefore lets the audience recognise the band from their other promotional media texts, such as the music video.

Product Research - Album Cover Analysis 2

Bombay Bicycle Club - Evening / Morning

Evening / Morning is the debut single from Bombay Bicycle Club, which was released 4th August 2008 by the independant record label: "Young and Lost Club".

First look at the album is quite stricking. The strong red contrasting with he black shadows of the face of what looks like frankinsteins monster breaks the conventions of the genre. Similar to album Flaws the cover contains a photograph, the title of the band and album and nothing else, which is common for this band.

The contrasting colours of red and black could invoke the emotions of passion and oppression which can relate to the title; Evening / Morning as in the evening it is dark and cold and in the morning the sun is bright and could connote passion. This is one interpretation of this.

The photo of the monster is looking down which is similar to flaws as it connotes depression. However the photo on this album is in a lot less detail which makes the emotions stand out more on the eyes and mouth which could relate back to the contrasting point of the colour.

On the forehead of the monster is a moderately hard to read title of the single. The font looks a lot like smudged blood which is reinforced with the red colour scheme. This may represent also that the evening and morning is merging which can be related to the single.
